Hickory Collective, Stewards

§ N° 01

A home built on stewardship.

We began as a small gathering of neighbors, long before we held the title of a collective. For years we tended the soil, learning that a single seed, planted with intention, carries more life than a thousand hurried ones. That intention is what we carried with us when we established our home at Hickory Farm, into a quiet landscape near Stoughton.

The collective you find today was not planned. It grew slowly, the way a forest should — one returning visitor at a time, one story shared between friends. We welcome participation from the start, not out of formality, but because the work we do requires hours of listening, learning, and presence. A gathering, in our hands, is not a service. It is a homecoming.

Land stewardship is often misunderstood. People imagine it as the absence of something — the absence of human touch, of intervention, of presence. We see it as the opposite: the presence of care. Every action we take on this land is one we have chosen not to take a hundred others around. The open space is the sanctuary. The breath between seasons is the rhythm.

"Care for the land. Care for the people. Harvest honorably."

We work exclusively with the land. There are mornings we spend three hours preparing for a forty-minute session. The soil must be read. The light in the field must be right. The community and we must arrive at the same temperature of attention. Without that, the land will know, and the land will tell — for the rest of our collective life.

Wisconsin has been generous to this kind of practice. The region has a long memory of care kept quietly — growers, healers, educators, artists — and our farm sits comfortably in that lineage. We are not interested in volume, in trends, in the visibility that comes from digital noise. We are interested in roots that will still feel honest in thirty years.

If you are reading this, you have likely already understood something about why Hickory Collective exists. The gate is open on purpose. The process is patient on purpose. What waits on the other side is not a service, but a collaboration — between your story, our land, and the discipline of a community moving slowly across the page of the earth.
